about

All profits from the sale of this song will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.

Early in 2017 I was diagnosed with a heart condition (Dilated Cardiomyopathy for those of you who are heart condition enthusiasts). Of course I did what any normal person would do and wrote a song about it. An oddly upbeat song considering every other thing I've ever written. Which makes it sound like I've written lots of songs. I haven't - it's mostly been poetry and prose, but it's fair to say most of that has had a dark element to it.

In the short time since my diagnosis, the British Heart Foundation have been wonderful, from the comprehensive information on their website to their genetic testing helpline. They have provided me with expert advice on my condition, which I was struggling to find elsewhere.

I was planning to do the obvious thing and raise money for the BHF through sponsorship for my next run...and then I managed to tear my calf muscle rather badly, which was awesome fun. I love this year. It's the best.

So, as I'm not going to be running any sponsorable distance any time soon, I thought why not actually do something with the song? Why not sell the song to friends and family and perhaps even some kindly strangers, and give the proceeds to the BHF? And that is exactly what I'm doing.

Could the song do with a few more million takes? Undoubtedly. Should I invest in more singing lessons? Possibly. But It's not like I'm entering Eurovision. I hope what it lacks in professionalism it makes up for in rustic charm.

And if the thought of listening to it is giving you flashbacks to watching an ex cocking up their big moment in the local amateur dramatics production, you don't have to actually listen to it. You can just buy it.

lyrics

Heart

What's up with you, heart?
You're acting like you don't know how to pump blood.
You're acting like you're a teenager in love.
What's wrong with a steady beat beat beat beat beat?

Come on - buck it up, heart.
You think beating steady is wasting your time,
but carrying this on, you'll be cutting short mine.
Just try for a steady beat beat beat beat beat.

But can you just keep beating
for long enough for me to
finish everything that I've started.
(I'm too happy for my heart to be broken.)

And can you just keep beating
for long enough for me to
finish everything that I've started.
(I'm too happy for my heart to be broken.)

The printer, the clock,
the cat-feeder, my watch all keep a rhythm.
How hard can it be just to keep time with them?
Even the tap keeps a steady drip drip drip drip drip.

I'm trying my best,
but I get short shrift for my concentration,
it does nothing to stop your syncopation -
you're determined to skip skip skip skip skip.

And can you just keep beating
for long enough for me to
finish everything that I've started.
(I'm too happy for my heart to be broken.)

And can you just keep beating
for long enough for me to
finish everything that I've started.
(I'm too happy for my heart to be broken.)

about

Iron Wife UK

If you can see through moustaches, you might recognise me from one of my parallel identities - poet Angela Cleland, novelist Cleland Smith, or mother-of-two Angela Smith.

The name Iron Wife stems from a cover of an Iron Maiden song I recorded for my husband.

If my music sounds a little bit homemade, that's because it is.
