about
"Heathrow" is a Christmas song, but it's not really a very nice Christmas song. Not really for opening presents to. More of a vengeful kind of Christmas song, if that's a genre. You might well ask, "Then what is it FOR?" I don't know, really. It just is.
I wrote it a few years ago when a couple of friends were having trouble with substandard menfolk and only just got around to recording it properly*.
*I use the term "properly" in the loosest of senses.
lyrics
Heathrow
It was such a lonely place to be,
although you were holding me,
you held me like you'd hold
a trench coat, or a briefcase or a suitcase,
not a human, not a life.
And Heathrow is such a lonely place to part,
when you waved it broke my heart.
When you waved, you waved as if
to a taxi, or a neighbour, or a stranger,
or to someone else's wife.
And how could you leave us
this close to Christmas?
How could you leave us
this close to Christmas?
And God, when we fall we fall so far,
Santa's in the airport bar.
And yes I'd go there.
But you know, now that it has been and gone
of all our Christmases this one's
been the best, without all your
tempers and your whiskey, and your grumbles
and your punctured Christmas thrills.
And now that I know what Christmas is
I could find it to forgive,
might send you a gift -
a self-help book, or a mirror, or a necktie,
or a razor, or some pills.
And I hope you enjoyed your quiet Christmas,
I hope you enjoyed your lonely Christmas,
I hope you enjoyed your empty Christmas.
